Last month in one article we stated: "If we introduce energy before we introduce release, we only create more and more tension." One of our readers wrote back and asked, "Why? Can you expand a little?" The horse and his body is something that can be quite complex to understand. Difficult enough to try to understand his body, even more difficult to understand the effects of the energy and how that affects his body. It might be helpful to envision the horse's body by beginning to look at his skeleton. If we look at his skeleton and envision the bone as being a bunch of sticks, matchsticks or toothpicks, just simple sticks. Riding is about how we affect those sticks. How do we get them to go from here to over there? To get anything to go from one spot to another we have to effect some sort of force upon it. We somehow have to either push or pull upon those sticks to get them to go from point a to point b. Of course all of this gets complicated by the fact that we have more than one step to get from point a to point b. In the case of the horse, it's those sticks that have to provide power to go from one point to another.
