Horses have a big heart – or?
Horses are large animals and are often thought of as animals with big hearts. Not only because they are so very generous, but quite literally in terms of heart size to body weight. If that only were true, so many unexplained, sudden deaths would simply not happen. As a matter of fact, the horse’s heart is rather small. It is about 0.5% of the horse’s bodyweight. In comparison, the size of the heart of a dog or cat is 1% of his body weight. What is behind that design? Not only does the horse have a small heart, but it also has long legs and the lower extremities have no muscle to help pump the blood to the far reaches of the hooves.
