Misha Zeman

The staff here at Horses for Life has been enjoying a brand new blog by one of our favorite contributors, the Purple Pony. Irreverent, funny, to the point and right now, challenging our brain cells. The latest post is intriguing. A mystery. Maybe you can help figure it out.

Check it out at:

This issue continues to explode with ever yet more material and insights from trainers across the globe. Join us at Horses For LIFE as we present Carlos Tabernaberri with the uplifting and instructional article as we follow along step by step on the starting of a wild horse, a brumby in the outback of Australia. The lessons of friendship and caring go far beyond the corral fence line.

From Australia and it's red earth continue on and join us as we provide an exclusive excerpt of the brand new book - The Great European Schools of Classical Dressage, reprinted with kind permission of the publishers - Cadmos. An insightful and beautiful text of the four schools, the history and where they are going today. "These four schools are considered to be the inheritors of 'equestrian tradition' in its most artistic, most accomplished and most noble form. Beyond their common roots, they however have distinct histories and discrete equestrian doctrines."

This past month the officials spoke out decrying the FEI's statement that the stewards need to steward. They spoke out bravely and clearly on what they have been seeing in the warm up rings and clearly state that this can NOT be laid at their door.

If you joined us on Facebook last month you already know about the IODC and the officials statement and your probably also already read the defining open letter from Dr. Mellon to the FEI on the latest research on the effect of NSAID's on the horse. We are happy that we are able through the Facebook interface keep you up to date in between our editions. We are still learning and experiencing how we can continue to incorporate this medium to the benefit of all of our readers.

Head on the Vertical A fashion that has failed the horse

Ramener Rassembler, Fashion, Fad or Truth.

An incredible in-depth article On The Vertical: A Fashion that is Failing the Horse explores the original concepts of ramener and rassembler, helping us to understand how we got to where we are today. Where everyone, everywhere, in every discipline seems to be associating a face on the vertical with good riding. We need to really understand the concepts of rassembler to understand that it never has been about placing, making or putting the head anywhere. Watch one young Andalusian stallion as he explores all of the endless variations that are possible in his body, that only the young and unspoiled horse today seems to be able to reach, where there is no angle or position he can't seem to move towards until he himself finds rassembler naturally within himself.

Are ramener and rassembler the words to blame for the false foundations of so many of our training methods of today? Cause and effect, Seunig, Wynamelen, Henriquet and Beudant words can perhaps help us to understand where it all began to go wrong and where we can go right..

As Nuno states we need to be finding the elements of rassembler from the very beginning in very basic work, it is something we are, not something that we do. Follow along as one rider who began to explore the open seat of Steinbrecht in the last issue, discovers for herself how the beginning elements of rassembler can truly be realized through a released seat and without the reins.

The Garrocha Rider, John Saint Ryan, explores how from the magic of Tom Dorrance, working with the garrocha or working on the ranch, the horses can be used at many things and benefit from all of them.

We then move on to explore with Nuno Oliveira how we can most effectively use the leg to communicate with our horses.

It started as a letter, it became an article, it then became the theme of this issue and we hope that it becomes a tidal wave that enflames us all. A message of hope and a call to action.

From last month's despair to this month's uplifting inspiring message I feel I have gone down to the pits and flown up again. A timid phone call, a short letter brought me from one to the other. I hope we can do the same for you.

"This is one HELLUVA powerful piece, and resonated strongly with me."

"Maybe it could be something you could ask readers to contribute to?"

"I THINK IT'S FABULOUS!!!"

The issue that was meant to be. The synchronicity has been mind blowing. One letter, created one article, which gave a voice to one author who didn't know it was in her to write. Another author wrote the prequel not even knowing that it needed to be written first. But perhaps someone up higher did. We already know that the sequel is already brewing in her heart. For weeks now we have been experiencing these coincidences that don't really seem like coincidences as from different places and people all over the world different elements are offered, explored and come together to make this happen.

Spiritual activism is to be for the good of all, not the good of a few or the promotion of some. If this is what is happening, then the work becomes tainted. We also then end up becoming a mirror image of those that we protest against. I struggle with this as an editor, as a human being, as someone who loves and cares about horses. While there is a blessing to raise awareness, how do I decide how many articles to put out for free, how do I decide what information to hold back for when the next issue of the magazine comes out. Covering rollkur has been both a blessing and a curse. Our refusal to let the subject go and decision to talk on and on from issue to issue has hurt us with some I know. Has lead them to say they are tired about hearing about it and has led some to say goodbye to the magazine. And I know that. But we made a commitment. To the horses in those pictures and we will not let it go.

Join us and others create an international awareness through the strength of the collective wisdom of the horses and bear gentle and healing witness.

Did you know that when we send out our announcement, that within hours, minutes our site's traffic goes through the roof? There are literally thousands, tens of thousands trying to access our site simultaneously. Unfortunately causing problems for our hosting companies and servers. Sometimes this causes problems and can crash the site. We ask for your patience, just wait ten minutes and try again, often this is the easiest solution. But we are aware of the problem. We have a year long project in place to move, improve and update both the hardware and software on the site. We apologize for any inconvenience in the meanwhile.

Many of you have written letting us know how much more you are enjoying our latest flip version making our magazine so much more clear and more beautiful than before. We have had a few reports, of a few people having some problems with printing. We are seeing what we can do about that problem, in the meanwhile we would like to remind everyone about HP's free program that you can print anything off of any website. You pick and choose what you want to print off a page. Less wasted paper and ink!

Of course we continue to offer our magazine in our regular web format for those who prefer this format or for those on a slower internet connection.

It is through discussion and debate, often passionate, that we are all challenged and through that process that all of us continue to grow and excel as horsemen.

You have no idea how incredibly proud I have been this past month to know that there are wonderful equestrians who are there, no matter what it takes, to be there on behalf of the horse.

Thank you for all that you do on behalf of the horses.

Thank you to all of you.
