Understanding the Entwickeln

Then, one day, a friend sent me a video.  The video showed a lesson at one of Herr Zettl's clinics, and lo and behold, the veils of mystery were finally lifted.  I finally got to see the "ENTWICKELN"!!!  And so much more than that, I got to see it in all of its endless permutations, so exquisitely done that it was a wonder to behold.  Enjoy this video of Eddo Hoekstra at work.

*What is Dressage?

The question is:  what really is Dressage?  Is it for the reiner, the jumper, or is it just for some people who like dressing up fancy?  What do the competition riders think of the classical, and what do the classical think of the competition riders?  Do we have a fight in the making?

*What Is Different about the Iberian?

Balance of the IberianThis is a caution for all those who love the Iberian. To force the Iberian into a frame and/or a balance seen in the competition arena or in your local riding arena and deemed appropriate for another breed is not necessarily what you want for the Iberian.  Dropping these horses onto their front end challenges their innate and strong sense of balance and threatens them mentally and physically.

Equine Hoof In Mouth Syndrome

Sometimes truth is truly stranger than fiction. This is one of those times. Something that everyone involved remembers and talks about for years afterwards. Something that shows how we need only to listen, to hear.

Crank Noseband - Theresa Sandin

Crank NosebandWhy the heck is it called a CRANK Noseband? Why has this become the noseband of choice? Why is it even necessary? And why, should we ask, who ever figured out that this might even be legal to even begin using it in the first place? Where have we gone that we see this noseband as a common piece in the dressage arena of today?

Rolfe: Human Nature Working With Horses

When we fill our thoughts with technical goals only, our mind is on a level of intense concentration and the spiritual side of our nature is diminished! I have come to the conclusion that the greatest and most important gift for the  rider is a love , passion and understanding of the horse.

Sense Method The Flow

Trying to force movement is counterproductive, leading to further resistance and tension. In contrast, SENSE Method work is soft and slow, and the practitioner's hands serve merely as pointers to guide the horse toward easy and elegant movement. Join us in rehabilitating a horse that all thought could not be changed.

Head Bob Galloping

The head bob is a mechanism to conserve energy on locomotion and respiration. Studying the head bob of the gallop we learn not just about the gallop but about the biomechanics of a horse in motion and how the rider effects the breathing on the horse.

Kissing Suspensories Goodbye

What is the importance of the purity of the gaits. One of the changes we have seen in the past few years is a change in a much more expressive extended trot. But what is the price? From the horse's perspective there is a very good reason to have purity in the gaits. A biomechanical reason. Rollkur interfers with that. Find out how, we may be putting our horses in the same danger as Barbaro.

A Monkey on His Back

Bridged the reins, put them down on the pommel, and never moved his hands , arms, or upper body (all in perfect alignment). After a while, Lancer got tired of bumping himself into the bit which presented to him in a constant manner. He then started to accept the bit, round, and gain suspension as [Insert famous clinicians name] effectively used his seat and legs in perfect position to develop energy from back to front.

Diags, Reins Tensors McPhail Chair

So what about the experiment that showed that at the trot there was a variance of each stride forward of 1 to 5 pounds of pressure on the reins?? This when the rider was not aiding. The question becomes what is this demonstrating.
