This is the story of an adventurous and
zealous horse endowed with a multitude of talents called Nickelby. He is
a ten year old Thoroughbred gelding (out of a mare by a stallion given
to the Jockey Club of Kenya by HRH Aga Khan) who won six races in Kenya
before moving on to Eventing, Jumping and Dressage. He occasionally
finds the time to provide a sturdy mount on safaris. All was going
just swellingly until…
Sometimes riders wonder what trust has to do with dressage. Isn’t
dressage after all, about telling your horse exactly how you expect it
to execute each movement? It’s not like a jumper or eventer who needs to trust their mount to make it over the obstacles, right? WRONG !
Part 2 - Anja Beran shares a lifetime of experience of working with
the Friesian and discusses how this breed is very different and very
unique -- unique characteristics that make this a very different horse
to train.
Perhaps at some level it is both ironic and fitting that the article that ended up being written as our 1000th article, is one that challenges the equestrian world as it was and always has been, and asks if together we can find a different way.
They were obliged to admit, together with the public, that my
performance at the "Cirque Olympique" was both new and extraordinary; though one
and all attributed the result to different causes, maintaining, of course, that
the rider's horsemanship was nothing compared to the sagacity displayed by the
horse.
