*Range of Movement

The health of the human body is judged by its range of movement.  Why then have we not made this same assessment of range of movement a fundamental element in working with horses?  It is essential that we -  the riders, trainers, and instructors - develop our awareness of what full range of movement is, and use this as our guideline of good riding.

When we look at the trots of our modern horses, especially the warmbloods as bred today, again and again we hear about impure trots, trots that are not truly diagonalized, trots that see little air time with all four feet off the ground. The Caspian shows some really good movement - movement at a trot where we seem to easily catch that moment when all four feet are off the ground and the horse is in suspension.
