APRIL 2007 • VOLUME 20 • © HORSES For LIFE™ Magazine ![]() Being willing to go backwards Sometimes in riding it seems that no matter how much I have learned, it’s not enough. There’s some skill I haven’t gotten right, and I need to go back and relearn it. I am learning to say to myself, “This is a good thing. I am getting the chance to deeply practice, so that I can get to greater harmony with my horse.” Today it was longeing. I was longeing my seven year old stallion in a lesson. No rider, just me and him. He can get very contracted in his body, and not forward. This makes him cranky and distracted. I can relate to that. It doesn’t feel good. There are times when I don’t want to get up off the couch to even answer the phone, but if I am encouraged and no one takes my stuckness seriously, I actually feel better when I get up and move around.
