Training the Courageous Horse

It takes courage, and a lot of it, for a horse to believe enough in himself to give all of himself. To be willing to try new things with his body, especially with a rider on his back.

The courageous horse feels confident in himself and in his body. When it comes time for learning the next thing, something that he has never tried before, he needs to reach deep within himself to find that courage, willing to step out of where he feels safe, comfortable, a place that is most important to the horse.

It takes a courageous horse to accept the challenges extended to him by his rider. To go from the comfort of a balanced trot and to allow the power of the extended trot. To go from a circle to a shoulder fore. Each step a challenge, each new movement, each new request for more power, a new challenge to a hard-won balance. A balance that in the wild could mean the difference between life and death.

It takes a courageous horse, a horse that believes in himself, to believe that yes, he can do this new thing. This thing that he has never been done before. Each new request, a new challenge, a request for the horse to look inside himself for the courage, the will to do what is asked for next.

So what happens if the horse has no courage?

How do you train the horse that does not believe in himself. Believe in his own strength, in his own dexterity?
