Summary
The horse is an elite athlete capable of both brief, high speed exercise and sustained, endurance exercise. The basis for these abilities include the presence of a capacious and capricious spleen, high concentrations of glycogen in muscle, and a superior cardiovascular system. The following article details these and other adaptations and makes illustrative comparisons to non-athletic species.
