The Fine Line of Forward “There is of course a loss of forward ... so we work on one small thing at a time.” The above quote came from a rider. Should it not give one pause, when one hears the words that “of course”, there is going to be “a loss of forward”? Number one, there should never be any 'of course' about ever losing the concept of forward when we work with our horses. How can the loss of forward be okay? But there are layer upon layers even in this discussion. Because there is no black and white answer to the question of forward and how much is enough and how much is too much. At one level there is never enough, there is never too much and we should always be looking for more. At another level, riding a horse that is continually running away with the rider, and rushing around, is not a lot of fun and is not exactly what is meant by forward either. So where is that fine line?
