I personally first became aware of the diagonal movement in walk one day when I was walking out a mare I was training after our workout. I was walking directly ahead of her, so I had my hand holding onto the reins behind my back, resting in a fist on my back side. The mare was all relaxed, striding out well; we'd had a really good workout. And the reins began to swing like a pendulum, stronger and stronger. It was so strange. Back and forth and back and forth, from side to side. I thought, well, I must be causing it by how I was walking, how I was holding the reins. So I tried changing how I was walking, how I was holding the reins, but the movement continued!! The only conclusion I could come to was that it was coming from the horse. And I was puzzled. Because it had, of course, occurred to me before that the movement of the horse went through the horse's body from back to front, to the horse's mouth, but... in this case, the reins were three feet ahead of the horse; the movement was traveling not just to her mouth but beyond!!! And so I began to try to understand how this would,
or should, relate to me, allowing and following all of the energies
that my horses had to give me.
