Healing Horses: The Child Who Would Not Sit Up

Once Upon a Time

ONCE upon a time. There was a sweet little boy, who loved horses. He was so proud the day that he got to show off for his classmates. His friends, classmates, and teachers had come out to visit our stable and to find out a little more about our riding program.

Downs Syndrome Boy

Adam had been coming out once a week to take lessons at our stable for the last two years. So with a minimum of assistance, we let Adam get to work. First he went and got his grooming tools and then proceeded to lovingly brush down his pony Snowstar. Meticulously he groomed Snowy until she gleamed with the attention. Methodically he cleaned out her hooves one by one. Then with anticipation he fetched his saddle, saddle blanket and bridle. He quickly placed the saddle blanket squarely on his mount and gently placed the saddle on her back. Grasping the bridle he made quick work of placing the bit gently into Snowstar’s mouth and placing the crown piece over ears, one by one. After leading his horse twice around the arena, we double checked the girth and he proudly mounted.

Carefully Listening to the InstructionsSetting up a small cross jump. He first walked and then trotted around the arena a few times before popping his pony over the jump. Once, twice, three times he circled back to pop over the jump, one more time under the watchful eyes of the instructor, carefully listening to the instructions as he rode.

One of the teachers turned to another and blurted out, “I didn’t know Adam would even sit up if you asked him!!” I turned in surprise towards the hushed voice, wondering what the heck she was talking about.
