MARCH 2006 • VOLUME 7 • ©HORSES For LIFE™ Magazine
Long and Low is the opposite of setting a horse's head high and both are wrong. Both of these continuums have been seen to come into and out of fashion throughout the ages. Long and Low has been here before and will be gone and then back again. Setting the horse's head high is supposed to gain control of lowering the haunches. Long and low is supposed to gain us access to the back. We want the horse's back to be used when we are riding. So horsemen talk about how the horse's back is supposed to be round. It is supposed to lift. The basic concept is that when the horse's head goes down the back raises therefore this is good. Watch a horse that is eating grass. His head is definitely down and low. Does his back lift or appear to lift? Yes.
