MARCH 2007 • VOLUME 19 • © HORSES For LIFE™ Magazine

I just stumbled on
your issue regarding this terribly UNclassical way of riding. How ugly,
how cruel, how disturbing and ignorant. This type of training/riding
needs to be reviewed and these 'trainers' who are teaching this
method need to be educated by the classical masters of our time
and of history.
Sincerely,
Cheryl Hileman
A heartfelt thank you for your support re the BHS article on the Anky
Convention. I was shocked and saddened to see this article, which
seemed to be written in a very superficial way, with no real knowledge
or substance behind it. With all the sterling work they do on welfare,
access, rights of way, training etc, this article seemed so
incongruous. Like many others, also long-term members of the BHS, I
wrote to them but received no reply.
It is a pity that an organisation as large and powerful as the BHS
allowed this article to be published, but with the not inconsiderable
weight of pressure from Heather Moffet and Sylvia Loch and yourself, it
seems they may have done a U turn. So thank you for lending your
support to this issue from all the little lesser known trainers who do
not have quite so much clout!
Keep up the good work. I so enjoy reading Horses for Life, and find it
educational as well as entertaining. It does take a month to get
through though, as there is so much on offer!
Best wishes,
Fiona Foy
Hi!
First of all I am an enthusiastic fan of Horses for Life. I eagerly await each issue and read it from “cover to cover”.
So it is with reluctance that I write to express concern over the Heart
Hoof Horse Connection article. To be honest I agree with every
word of it! My own two horses are shoeless and I am eager to
learn more. The problem? Claudia Garner is a trained
Strasser Hoofcare Professional and in the UK where I am based Strasser
trimming has become, deservedly in my judgement, the pariah of those of
us who choose non-invasive “Do No Harm” trimming methods for our
horses. Indeed because of Strasser trimming, trimming by anyone
other than a qualified farrier is now illegal in Germany, Dr Strasser’s
base, as I understand directly because of the problems caused by this
method.
In the UK the whole barefoot movement has been put onto the defensive
by some high profile court cases in which Strasser HCP’s have been
successfully prosecuted in relation to their treatment of horses.
To a lot of us, this method is the Rollkur of the barefoot
movement. So I was dismayed at the prospect of a series of
articles about this method. As dismayed as when I read the Anky
interview in the BHS mag!
I trust that the editing team of Horses for Life are knowledgeable
enough to ensure that future articles are as “innocuous” as the
first. But at the very least you are giving credibility to a
method which is far too invasive and in the wrong hands causing pain
and death to many horses. If you require more evidence of this I
would be pleased to provide you with it.
Barefoot yes! But please feature one of the non-invasive trimming
schools – the AANCHP or the Institute of Equine Podiatry.
Yours sincerely
Jane
Thank you for the information and for the work you are doing against rollkur.
Watching the pictogram made me sad and angry in a way that one seldom
feels. I have never ridden a horse but the beauty of equines can be
readily recognized even by a person that does not have a closer
relationship to them. There is nothing beautiful in these pictures!
Everything I have to say about the numerous photos is based on common
sense. In this case it is enough, I think. I see animals which try to
do their best, even though it seems to be impossible. In the most
twisted positions they don't even look like horses any more! Anyone who
claims these horses don't suffer is either blind, mad or totally
senseless.
I really hope something can be done against this kind of training
methods. This message is hardly anything else than a drop in the ocean
but I hope you feel you are making the right job in objecting rollkur!

Your online magazine has been such an inspiration!
I was so down because of the competition standards, what the horses had
to endure. I know now that I am on the right path, and your
magazine validates that.
Thank YOU! Truly a gift.
