“Langsamer Treiben” Go to any arena where they speak German and don't be surprised to hear the words “langsamer treiben”. One cannot say the word langsamer without expressing the feeling that it portrays. Langsamer, langsamer, langsamer slowly falls off the lips the same way we want the horse to slowly continue onwards. The literal translation of this phrase is “langsamer" slower – “treiben” step – so, step more slowly. We understand that it is in the process of getting our horses to step slowly or langsamer, that we can expect to find the beginnings of collection and self carriage. It is how we get the horse to langsamer treiben that determines if we will truly reach self carriage or if instead, we end up with a horse constricted, unable to move fully. So, how do we ask the horse to langsamer treiben and maintain full movement?
