Man transcends himself on horseback -- and therein lies the essence of his love for the animal. Romantic as it sounds, it is nevertheless true that on a horse man plumbs deep into the unconscious as something of the primeval spirit of the centaur floods over him, and though he is still bound to the earth, he can satisfy, if only briefly, his eternal longing to fly.
