Healing Horses: Why Does it Work?

So why does it work?

Healing Horses: Why does it Work?

One week we were lucky to have a reporter come out from our local newspaper to do an article on one of our horses. Seems kind of strange to end up on the sports page, along with reports on baseball, but it was great to be featured!! The reporter must have been here for a good two hours so we obviously had lots of time to talk and talk and talk. Near the end of the conversation Bob asked us “So why does this work?”. I’m not sure if it was because I was tired after talking non-stop on my favorite subject horses or exactly what, but I didn’t respond with my standard reply.

How riding the horse is an isometric type of exerciseMy standard reply is probably very much the same as most of you. How riding the horse is an isometric type of exercise and therefore works the muscles and joints of the riders body regardless of conscious violation. Explaining how the movement of the horse’s body at the walk, mimics the movement of the human body and how that movement is transferred to the rider from the horse’s spine to the riders’ spine. How being with and riding the horses help with self-esteem and self-confidence that then can transfer to other activities. How the horse provides a very wide, stable base of support providing extra support for the back. And so on, and so on.

But….,

somehow after having shared for the past two hours some of the amazing things I have seen, my standard reply somehow didn’t seem adequate. And instead of answering with my standard reply, I turned to the reporter and said, “I don’t know, why.”

I dont know why
