Healing Horses - The Gift of Sight

SEPTEMBER 2005 • HORSES For LIFE™ Magazine

The true story of a rider and a horse that found within each other, a special moment, a special gift that each probably never expected to recieve.

Healing Horses a Series of Articles on the Healing Power of the Horse

The Gift of Freedom

ne day we had a new rider come to the stable. He looked like an old cowboy right from the movies. Old cowboy hat, well worn and stained, grizzled, tall but wiry. Bushy eyebrows that were peppered with black and white hairs. A firm handshake and a deep and powerful voice. He even walked a little with that bow-leggedness that you see with a really old cowboys. I have to admit I took an instant liking to him.

While as much as he looked like the cowboy that he wanted to be, it was some time since he had been on the back of a horse. A very long time. A time before he had begun to loose his eyesight.

He was now completely blind. He could see maybe a few shadows out the side of his eye, but he never was too sure what those shadows were. But he was independent and fiesty, everything an old cowboy should be. We took him for a tour of the barn and introduced him to the horse he was going to learn to ride on. Or at least the horse that we had planned on him learning to ride on.

But it was not to be, he had other ideas. He found in our barn a soul-mate, a special friend. A horse that was a beautiful black Peruvian Paso.
