For the best part of the year, life in the small Ribatejo town of Golegã in central Portugal proceeds in much the same way as it always has, unremarkable in its adherence to the rhythms of rural agricultural life. Along with many other towns and cities across Europe, Golegã celebrates, every November, the Feira de São Martinho, or St. Martin ’s Fair, one of a number of festivals which take place throughout the year. What makes this particular town’s celebration famously unique is that it incorporates Portugal ’s largest and most important annual horse fair.
