For LIFE
Recently I was asked why we call the magazine Horses For LIFE. It had been so long since we had been asked this question, my brain faltered, hesitated, not ready to twist and turn into that direction to find an answer. After all, no one asks that question. It's as if everyone already knows the answer. Horses are our life, as much a part of who we are as the air that we breathe, and at some level just as important to our mental and spiritual health. Strange perhaps to those who do not understand the power horses hold over us, with us and through us. Understanding perhaps the aspect of physical health, but never understanding the strong internal need of just being with our horses. How just standing even for a few moments with our horses in the pasture can bring us that sense of peace, of contentment that we struggle to have in our lives, and which seems to miraculously just appear in their presence. 
It is this sense of health, that peace, that each of us finds in our equine companions that continues to draw us back again and again. Words fail us as we try to explain what happens, and how. Somehow it takes us out of ourselves, out of who we are, where we are in our lives, and places us centered back in touch with something quite fundamental. Working with our horses can bring us both to pinpointing and expanding our consciousness at the same time. Riding, truly good riding, riding that comes from trying to expand our consciousness - to reach out to our horses, to truly try to become part of their bodies, creates in some way a unique opportunity. We try to crawl out of our own bodies into theirs. Realizing it is only through our being able to influence their bodies that we can find true success. While consciously we try to reach out, outside of ourselves, to create a better influence on our horse, something else happens through our efforts.
