A follow-up article on Horses Not Breathing Your questions asked and answered by the researcher!
Special Thanks to Dr. Derksen to take the time out of his busy schedule to answer our questions directly. These were the questions and thoughts brought up by our readers. We will examine which ones are true, which ones are false, provide further information and clarification and which ones we need further study on. 1. That the head position brought muscles into play that pushed against the breathing apparatus of the horse and this is what impeded the horse's breathing. 2. That incorrect work and a stronger use of the underline of the horse's neck muscles would push and cause the bulging that obstructed the breathing. 3. That this only becomes important when the horse has a past history of breathing problems. 4. That dressage horses don't work at 100% output and therefore this study does not apply to them. 5. The surprising effect of overbending the horse past the vertical and/or rollkur on these breathing mechanics.
