General Decarpentry brings to us in his Academic Equitation an invaluable classification of the various movements. Through this classification we get an overview of the logic of the training progression. How one movement evolves from another. The natural training progression that occurs.
Decarpentry refers to four different levels of training or schools.
The "Airs Above the Ground" of course refer to the levade, the coubetter, the capriole etc.. While only a few schools consistently work on the airs above the ground, for the rest of us dressage consists of the other three training levels. The low school, the high school and then finally the airs close to the ground. Our training requires that we complete each stage with the horse well established in each before we progress.
Decarpentry provides us with the following classifications.
