ortugal
has a tradition for classical dressage that runs hand in hand with its traditions for the noble art of riding and ridden bullfighting. These traditions were brought to the attention of the world in the 1960’s and 70’s by the great Nuno Oliveira.
Oliveira had many students, but several held a special place and one of those was his distant cousin Luis Valença.

Valença's illustrious equestrian career has included working for many years in the
Portuguese
Academy
of Equestrian Art (in which he was involved very early on, and soon gained a reputation for remarkable long reining and in-hand work) and he now produces his own Baroque Equestrian shows that tour the world.
Twenty-one years ago he also set up a training centre 25 km north of
Lisbon
at Villa Franca de Xira, the Lezeria Grande Centre. One of his sources of pride is that the first horses used in the centre are still alive and well.
