Part 2 Interview with Charlotte Wittbom of Morgado Lusitano. Charlotte shares with us her feelings on how wonderful it is to be an instructor and how we learn when we begin to teach. Strange in a way that teaching in the end means we actually learn far more than we ever knew before we began teaching. [HFL]: Don’t you find that too, how much [more] you learn when you start teaching? [Charlotte]:That is it exactly. And that’s almost like what’s happening now as I’m explaining to you that you have to practice and learn to put words to things. Learning comes in different ways. You can go up [to the horse] and show it. It is a very good way. But then I’m also learning to put it into words. I’m learning a lot myself by just finding the words for things that you do with feeling, and explaining it in a way that the rider will understand. [HFL]: And when you do do that, you have to examine much more closely things that may come to you naturally. And the more you do that, the more you learn how to do it better yourself. It’s a wonderful circle actually, because as a teacher, you’re passing that knowledge on, but you’re getting it right back again. Ten fold. [Charlotte]: You do! I want to be a good rider. I always want to improve, and I’m always open to learning. And the same thing, I think, to be a good teacher is that you have to be open to signals and that you never fully teach the same way because of this combination of rider and horse. You’re always learning. It’s an art. I don’t know if you can compare it to a musician…..
