"Pass the Champers, darling!"

A spectator's blog of Badminton horse trials...

Badminton Horse Trials are a singularly English tradition, held over four days in May for as long as I, and many others, can remember.

Panorama

A typical English blend of high class and popularity, around 250,000 people (yes that's not a misprint!) attend the event every year, making it not only the biggest horse event in the world, but also one of the biggest of all sports events.

Ahh, Badminton (sigh) a name with such resonance, the ancestral home of the Duke of Beaufort, the birthplace of the game of Badminton, and historic host of the Badminton Horse Trials since 1939 or something ridiculous like that. Not bad for a village of 50 inhabitants (well one is the Duke of Beaufort I suppose)

What is even more amazing is to see how this little, typical Gloucestershire village steams into action to pull off one of the smoothest and most impressive logistics achievements of the year. Time after time.
