JANUARY 2007 • VOLUME 17 • © HORSES For LIFE™ Magazine

The present situation in competitive
sport, particularly in regard to dressage, has given reason to
invent a new noseband device – ensuing from the belief that normal
human strength would not be sufficient to close a standard noseband.
Therefore, a special block and tackle has been developed which can be
used to close the noseband tightly.
With this modern device, the so-called Swedish noseband, the horse's
jaw is pressed together in such a way that it is difficult for it even
to swallow, not to mention chomp and move the tongue.
The intention, however, is that the horse should – lightly and happily!
– execute the highest airs… Problems with the mouth, which are caused
by bad riding, are hushed up and the horse is helplessly subjected to
any faults the rider makes with the reins – the judge is no longer able
to exercise a control function of the rider.
