"For many riders it is the movement known as "yielding to the leg" that introduces the horse to the lateral movements. Nevertheless "yielding to the leg" is not classified as a lateral movement because its main purpose is to teach the horse to understand the significance of the predominant aid of one leg. But obedience to the leg is only one of several factors of correct execution of the lateral movements. In principle a horse should not be made to "yield to the leg" at any other gait than the walk." Why would Albrecht suggest that the leg yield should only be practiced in walk? While there are many trainers who religiously practice leg yield there are other trainers who suggest that leg yield has no true value to the horse. Why would this be? To understand what divides trainers on this question of leg yield we need to understand what is so different about the leg yield that is not present in other lateral movements....
