Dr. Robert Cook has made it his
lifetime work to study the head and neck of the horse. Through a
lifetime of experience and his own research, he has amassed a vast
amount of knowledge. Who better to share the knowledge of his
experience with the FEI on the subject of rollkur?
Bob Cook (b.1930 in England) graduated from the Royal Veterinary
College, London in 1952, was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of
Veterinary Surgeons by thesis in 1966 and earned his doctorate from
Cambridge University in 1976. Apart from three years in mixed
practice and another three years in horse practice during his immediate
post-graduate years, he has been an equine clinician, teacher and
research worker for the whole of his career. For eight years he
was a senior scientist at the Equine Research Centre of the Animal
Health Trust in Newmarket, England. For the remaining 41 years he
has been a member of faculty at University Veterinary Schools in
Britain (Cambridge, London and Glasgow), Kenya and the United States
(Illinois and Tufts). During this time his primary appointment
has been in clinical departments, with a secondary appointment,
latterly, in a department of anatomy. His research focus has
always been diseases of the head, neck and chest of the horse. On
these topics he has published three books, one video, over 100
scientific articles and another 40 or more articles in horseman’s
journals. In
1991 he was given the Tierklinik-Hochmoor Award from Germany for
“outstanding research on diseases of the ear, nose and throat of the
horse.” In 1979, as the first Associate Dean at a new school,
he was responsible for establishing the clinical program at Cummings
School of Veterinary Medicine, Tufts University. He also served
as the Acting Dean for a period. He was appointed Professor of
Surgery Emeritus at Tufts University in 1994.
Working for months without any expectation of any return to himself,
Dr. Robert Cook has put together a 51 page document that he has now
forwarded to the FEI. His passion - to help the horses. His only
possible concern is that this information is not shared by the FEI.
That the FEI does not give this 51 page document and summary the
attention that it truly deserves in its ongoing talks on the subject of
rollkur.
Dr Cook has graciously agreed to share this 51 page document in a PDF
format. Read about the effects of rollkur on the digestive,
respiratory, nervous and cardiovascular system. There are many gems
presented within this paper.
